Day 94 – Eggs-actly 9 miles

4 04 2010

Somewhere between the early morning Easter egg hunt and an early dinner with friends I ran my 9 miles today. I have looked forward to this milestone — getting back to where I was in October when I did the 9-mile leg of the Denver Marathon relay. I knew I could go this distance, but not without working back up to it.

From here – it feels mostly uphill to the half marathon. Longer distances than I’ve ever run before for six weeks. The first 4 miles today were frustrating with that on my mind. A sunny day, but a strong wind chilling my legs in shorts… a runny nose still lingering, and sluggish from eating vacation food all week.

Mid-morning is a tough time for me to run. I turned down my insulin pump and tried to eat Cliff shot gummies to restore my sinking blood sugar – ewww – not what I could stomach. The consistency of gummy bears without the right taste even though they sold it as wild cherry flavor.

Glucose tablets are much easier to swallow and got the job done. With quick sugar on board, the last 5 miles felt great — warmer and mentally better knowing the bulk of the run was over and that I could do it with energy left — and just time enough to cook my contribution to Easter dinner.

The highlight of the run was definitely the spring flowers popping up among the brown landscape. A few daffodils and red tulips along my route — and yellow crocuses finally making their appearance in my front yard! Easter signs of spring and warmer miles to come.
